Sitting itself is kinda boring, but design shouldn’t be… it should be fun! That’s the philosophy behind this modern interpretation of the classic Panton chair. To preserving the timeless character of the chair, the designers have avoided decorating it arbitrarily. The chair becomes an integral part of the design, as it would have been intended as a rocking horse by Panton in 1959. Original materials of the chair combined with locally grown wood, (in contrast to the dark fabric & metal) communicate elegance & lightness.

Cover chair with folded plywood armrests by Thomas Bentzen for Muuto

The Cover wood and plywood chair by Thomas Bentzen for Danish brand Muuto is made without any metal parts. Instead it is locked together by the bent veneer armrests.

"I aimed for a crisp and vivid expression in the plywood while looking for a solid and grounded look in the frame and base of the chair," said Bentzen. "Three years of play and hard work in the making has resulted in a light yet strong armchair, playing and taking the moulded veneer to its extreme."

The chair comes in ash or oak, lacquered in black, grey, dark grey, red, green or natural.

Copenhagen designer Bentzen started his own studio in 2010 and is co-founder of design collective Remove.

USEFUL LIVING FURNITURE BY LEE SANGHYEOK

Ready-to-assemble in solid oak and brass, Useful Living Furniture by Lee Sanghyeok - Useful Shelf, Useful Rack, Useful Chair - draws on construction scaffolding, nomadic living, and reflections on classic Danish furniture design by Lee, a young Berlin-based Korean designer, during a three-month residency in Denmark.
