Elda Chair by Scoope Design

Italian designers Elda Bellone and Davide Carbone have created 'elda chair', the first collaborative projectfor their new studio Scoope design. with a hinged construction, this object provides the versatile functionof a chair, stepladder or storage unit, con figuring itself to the needs of the surrounding space. A magnetic locking system holds the design in its desired position.'elda' is manufactured with sustainable materials, from its wooden structure to the water-based paint fi nish.a 100% wool felt hood, available in two colors, acts as an exchangeable accessory that also preventsscratches when it is turned into its ladder mode. This notion of transforming chairs, taking the seat and designing it to become an alternative piece of furniture is not new.The concept of the chair becoming a step ladder was conceived as early as the 18th century. For specific historical examples, see designboom's article on the 'library chair / step chair' here.

Remember me Chairs Made From Recycled Clothes are Really Stylin'!

We can have clothing exchanges, yard sales or donate to thrift stores, but sometimes there are old clothes that just can’t find new life. German designer Tobias Juretzek begs to differ. Using a pile of old jeans and shirts, he has recycled the worn out clothes into Rememberme furniture. Old clothes have never been so fashionable!Using cast-off clothing from friends, thrift shops and even his own closet, Juretzek presses the pieces together into chairs and tables.About 13 pounds of used clothing goes into each durable chair. Juretzek soaks each item in resin, before compressing them in a mold to dry. The resulting pieces are (mostly) smooth, and can fully support the weight of an adult.Although made of lumpy clothing, the chairs and tables resemble the structure of wooden or plastic chairs, with points and angles, thanks to the molding process. Aside from the stray button fly or zipper, the surfaces are smoothed out with the resin coating.Juretzek’s concept builds off the memories we attach to clothing. The dress we wore on that first date with Jimmy, or the shirt that was worn when scoring that home run. What happens when that nostalgic piece of clothing becomes too worn, or out of style, or we simply outgrow it?Juretzek weaves memory together with function, creating a useful item that can create new memory- as a fixture in our homes. Not to mention the colorful patterns and textures of the clothing makes for a great conversation piece! The Rememberme chairs are going to be produced this fall by Casamania, an Italian furniture company.

NW 057 Chair and NW 208 Table by Rainer and Tobias Kyburz

No Waste is not only the name of this new collection by the Swiss brothers and designer duo Rainer and Tobias Kyburz, it’s also the idea behind the new pieces.

NW 057 Chair.NO WASTE is an Idea. The idea of functional furniture. Combined with the idea of a sustainable and conscious use of resources, material and production. The prototype of the Chair NW 057 was developped in a way similar to the table NW 208 of the NO WASTE series. The chair also bases on a precise form concept which allows all parts to be cut from one single piece of wood. The pieces’ shapes all derive from each other and allow the use of the material causing nearly no waste. This special construction principle results in polygon surfaces and unconventional shapes which add up to a comfortable and extraordinary piece of seating furniture. Again, the basic material is coated FSC-certificated plywood which provides the chair with a highly resistant surface. This material results in a surprising elegance due to the color contrast between the dark surfaces and the bright cutting lines.

NW 208 Table

The table was the first piece of furniture of this series, created using one piece of wood, just like the NW 057 Chair. Since each piece is made to order, the customer can choose their preference of wood and finish.
