Roxanne Chair by Michael Young

Designer Michael Young inspired from 1970s disco decor has created new chair.

Combining ergonomics, technology and sculpture he came up with shape of the chair is made from an extruded polyurethane form, which is then upholstered in fabric, allowing for an infinite number of color and pattern variations.

Extruded armchair named Roxanne is designed for Italian furniture manufacturer Gufram.

TOOL CHAIR BY FREDERIC JULIAN RÄTSCH

"How do we actually sit? Do we really need the whole seat or a classic backrest? Is there always a front or a back? - To questioning known typologies and standards is fundamental in my work as a designer. It is not about making just new and pleasing things, or even for a fashion trend, but rather about driving forward an evolution of things. In doing so, it is necessary to fathom out and change boundaries. The TOOL CHAIR is a chair which enables - maybe even provokes - flexible seating. It enables the sitter to take up various postures and positions. A bent plate on the side offers support, be it as arm rest or backrest, to hold on to, to rest on or place something. With its narrow seat, the TOOL CHAIR cultivates the habit of sitting on the edge of a chair. With its rounded sides and edges, it does not prescribe a sitting posture and allows the sitter to move in any direction.

On average we sit about 9.3 hours per day - much more than we stand, walk or lie. Sitting permanently in one position is unhealthy and sap one's energy. The TOOL CHAIR is to help the user remain concentrated, not for relaxing. On this chair you stay agile - you stand up and sit down again. The seat height is higher than usual to facilitate this. The TOOL CHAIR does not extrapolate immediately, but rather has to be discovered. This involvement increases the "potential for identification". Mostly the chair is not perceived indifferently, but surprises and provokes the user towards discovery.

The TOOL CHAIR is the result of the bachelor thesis on the subject of "Serial Production - a Restriction". In addition to the theme of agile seating, the project’s focus was the precise multiplication of a product with the tools of university’s workshop. The concept and design were continually tested and adapted with serial production in mind.

The restriction was taken as a chance for simplicity and clarity. The design is characterized by straight wooden slats which are just cutted in a special angle and glued afterwards. Tools for the reproduction of components were built in order to manufacture several chairs in a standardised process."

BALANCE STOOL BY DARRYL AGAWIN

Canadian designer Darryl Agawin helps user to exercise core muscles while they sat in front of their desk. The stool is an extension of a furniture range Agawin designed to offer busy workers the chance to exercise in the office.

The Balance Stool is made of wood reclaimed from ash trees destroyed by pests such as the emerald ash borer. Each element of the stool is made using computer numerically controlled (CNC) techniques and the legs are then friction fitted into holes in the underside of the seat.The wood is finished with a traditional Danish technique in which pure soap flakes are made into a paste with hot water and applied to the surface of the furniture.

PP Mobler Swivel Chair by Hans J. Wegner

"The PP Mobler Swivel Chair from 1955 constitutes a cross between the hard steel frame and the soft wood and leather. It is an uncompromising tool with comfort and ergonomics as overriding considerations.

In actual fact it is a continuation of the Round Chair, also known as The Chair, which marked a turning point, not just for Wegner but also for Danish Design in general. The top bar, made of solid wood and twisted like a propeller, is separated from the remaining frame and completed at the very limit of what is possible for full ergonomic advantage.

Wegner was inspired by Consultant, Professor and Doctor of Medicine & PhD Eigill Snorrason’s critique, which was aimed at the entire Danish design and furniture trade for not paying enough attention to ergonomics.
In his critique, however, Snorrason had actually pointed out that Wegner’s Cow Horn Chair, which had the same backrest as the Round Chair, was in fact an ergonomically correct exception to the rule, and the two passionate professionals engaged in a dialogue, which resulted in the Swivel Chair with a large piece of solid wood as support for the lower back."

In Between Chair by Sami Kallio for &Tradition

Designed by Sami Kallio and dubbed the In Between chair, it is made in ash and oak and comes with a crescent-shaped back and armrest that attaches to the seat through three wood veneer panels. It’s a beautiful clash between the industrial process of manufacturing and the traditional techniques that make us think of hand-crafted wooden furniture.

The production of the lounge chair involves all residents in the village where the FSC-certified sawmill is located. The women from the village can crochet the designed rug while the men cuts the wood at the sawmill, and thereby contribute to the village’s furniture production. The rug increases the chair’s seating comfort, while creating a contrast between the hard wood and soft yarn.

The chair can be produced in many different types of hardwood that will give many different expressions. Thereby giving focus to the many FSC certified woods available, and encourages a sustainable discussion and attitude.

In addition, a simple change of the color on the rug leads to a new variation and expression of the chair.

The chair is very production friendly. It can be flatpacked and takes up a minimum of space during transport. The packaging measures exactly one half of a europe pallet, and it is thereby easy to stack and transport in a container.

In addition, all parts of the chair consist of wood with the same dimensions and are only joined together by dowels and glue.

The rug can be arranged in four different ways on the chair, due to the single armrest, see photos, thereby making it easy to fit your seating needs.
