Portiquearmchair by Florent Coirier

Florent Coirier's PortiqueArmchair is an indoor garden swing without the bulk of the outdoor type. Also inspired by the loading of ships in the port of his home town of Nantes/Saint-Nazaire, Coirier's PortiqueArmchair is made of materials used in shipbuilding. Says Coirier,
"Drawing on the expertise of boilermakers and carpenters workshops, the chair uses materials common to shipbuilding. The aluminum tube is bent and used its light properties, creating an illusion compared to the apparent strength of the tubes. The Traditional natural rope, is replaced by the nautical rope in polyester and polyamide, stronger and more varied in choice of colors. The wooden board is retained, but treated in a noble solid wood."

Chair Objets by Seung-Yong Song

Chairs that double up as ladders, clotheshorses, shelves or lamps are part of a collection of furniture by Korean designer Seung-Yong Song. The first eight chairs each integrate a piece of furniture commonly found in a bedroom, but can also be grouped together to form a bed.A clothing line positioned atop a rocking chair is Objet E, which can move back and forth to gently help dry hanging garments.Objet O is a chair tucked inside a giant paper lampshade that can be folded down to create a private den.A ladder is the backrest for the chair named Objet B, but can also be used as shelving like the similar Objet A.Seung-Yong Song exhibited the collection during Seoul Design Festival 2011, which took place last month.

Here’s a description of each piece from Seung-Yong Song:
8objets: I do not bother myself with looking for the perfect space to my own body.I read, work, eat and also sleep in this. This space is cozy and free. This is my own space that makes all I want possible.Objet-O: I have a childhood memory of making a den somewhere in my house- Under the table, in the wardrobe, and in the attic- I created my own base and felt relieved as if I avoided enemies that were actually non-existent.Objet-E: The unique name of things limit the range of product’s shape and function, but above all, the fact that there exists stereotyped function in accordance with each unique name suppresses my imagination.I am not willing to deny or destroy the identity based on the stereotype, but I only reinterpret the uses I need in my own design language.Objet-B: I climb on a chair. I put books on a ladder. If things are freed from their own unique functions, we might agonize over how to use this objects.Objet-A: I am looking in every nook and cranny of the room to find hidden spaces.Under the table, beneath the bed, above the wardrobe … All the space in the room is completely full of odds and ends. There’s no other choice. And I start building my objet like the city’s tallest building seen from the window in the room.

Re- Lounge Chair by Hella Jongerius

More from Jongeriuslab:

The re-design of the North Delegates' Lounge pays tribute to the history of this crucial space within the United Nations' headquarters in New York, while adding striking contemporary accents. Monumental architectonic interventions alternate with ample attention for material details, tactility and colors. Existing designs alternate with new designs, Dutch designs are mixed with international designs.
The U.N. headquarters were originally completed in 1952 and financed in part by donations from the member states. Between 2009 and 2013 the buildings are being renovated. The Netherlands have adopted the re-design of the North Delegates' Lounge. After a selection process, in which four Dutch design teams competed with each other, the team assembled by Hella Jongerius was selected.
The re-design of the North Delegates' Lounge is an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and will be completed in 2012.

Park Avenue Collection by Søren Rose Studio

Scandinavian design firm, Søren Rose Studio launched the outstanding Park Avenue Collection at Tramshed 2011. Produced in collaboration with De La Espada, the collection consists of nine products that exhibit true craftsmanship while exploring new material combinations including cork, marble, aluminum, brass, fabric and natural wood. Using solid, beautiful materials, the collection is simple in nature yet obsessive in detail, resulting in long-lasting, timeless pieces that offer a fresh take on modern living. There’s strong references to the likes of Knoll’s Platner chair and an overall link to the great designs of the 1960′s America.
Designer Søren Rose says, “All of the pieces are designed for real people and the result is a very dramatic collection that combines the best of the Scandinavian furniture tradition with a New York contemporary feeling.”
